Well nothing is free… free. But the UK gov with a consortium hope to launch solar panel receptors large enough to power a million homes from SpaceXs new Starship.
Solar collectors in space do not have to deal with clouds and night time which is a real problem for the UK!
It then uses microwaves to transfer the power to a base station. Although this initially rings alarm bells that if it goes off target does it fry people in the street like some War of the Worlds type ray beam? I suspect they will have safety protocols? Until AI uses it to fry us all that is? Nah they say it will be no more powerful than the sun already is? Plus I suspect the placement of the collector being off the UK coast allows for some warning rather than over a village!
